Researching Legislative Topics
A.H.C.A. - Affordable Health Care Act
Part of understanding law is the ability to research the facts and defend your position. This week the US Supreme Court is hearing arguments regarding the AHCA. Those for the law say it's necessary; those against it claim it violates the commerce clause. But, exacty what is this law and what would it mean to us as consumers and to business owners if it is upheld?
Your assignment is to research the contents of the bill and decide for yourself if you think this legislation should be passed. Below is a list of questions that you need to answer so that you can prepare for a class debate on the topic.
You will be graded on the accuracy and completeness of the answers to the questions. You will submit your answers via Google Docs. Then, we will debate the topic in class on Friday. Refer to the How to Analyze a Legal Case.pdf document to help you with your research. You will need to cite a minimum of 5 resources. Use the Citation Machine to help you format your sources (MLA).
What is the Affordable Health Care Act? (Summarize the legislation)
Why was the bill proposed?
What provisions or stipulations are included in the Act?
Based on the provisions, how will the new law affect businesses? Insurance companies?
Based on the provisions, how will the new law affect consumers (like you)?
Does this Act violate the Commerce Clause? If so, how? If not, explain why.
Are you for or against the Act? Why? You MUST defend (factually) your position.
If you are against the Act, are you for some time of health care reform? What would you propose?
If you are not for ANY type of legislation, explain why. Defend, factually, your position.
If you support the Act, illustrate in detail why you think this Act is good for the American people and business.
